Enugu State celebrated the World food day in grandstyle with a focus on eradicating hunger and poverty.
World Food Day 2024 was celebrated in Enugu on October 16, The event was organized by the State Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization. The theme for this year, “Right to food for a better life and better future,” aligns with the administration’s vision to ensure access to nutritious food for all residents.
The Governor of Enugu state Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah was represented by Prince Lawrence Ezeh, He emphasized the state’s commitment to achieving food sufficiency through mechanized agriculture and the establishment of 260 Smart farm settlements across all wards by 2025. He encouraged farmers to prioritize the production of quality food, aligning with the global theme of World Food Day, which commemorates the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. Mbah’s initiatives aim to unlock the rural economy and enhance food security in Enugu.
The event showcased various local agricultural products, including rice, cassava, and palm oil, underscoring the state’s goal to reduce reliance on neighboring regions for food.
Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government, highlighted efforts to support over 60,000 registered farmers with essential resources like fertilizers and power tillers to enhance productivity.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Patrick Ubru, reiterated the importance of advocating for policies that promote sustainable agriculture and safeguard the right to food.
The Team of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES Enugu State) led by The L-PRES Enugu State Project Coordinator Dr Mrs Ifeyinwa Nnajieze were also visible to profile the livestock farmers present at the event.
