L-PRES Enugu recently visited Udi and Ezeagu Local Government respectively for a sensitization program aimed at livestock farmers as part of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project initiatives focused on profiling farmers to enhance productivity in cattle, goat and sheep, piggery, and poultry farming.
Orientation on project objectives and resources for improving farming practices was detailed by Mmamel-Akpata Chinenye, the Value Chain/Market Linkage Officer, who represented the State Project Coordinator L-PRES Enugu, Dr. Ifeyinwa Elizabeth Nnajieze. Key objectives include enhancing agricultural productivity through modern techniques, promoting sustainable resource management, and improving market access for farmers. The project also emphasizes capacity building and training to empower farmers with knowledge of best practices and climate resilience strategies The initiative aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s agricultural development agenda to empower farmers and boost economic growth in Enugu State.
Honorable Engr. Hyginus Ogbonna, Chairman of Udi Local Government, expressed his satisfaction with the recent visit from the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) team with the initiative to educate and support local livestock farmers in Enugu, enhancing productivity and commercial practices in the sector. He gave is full support and said he is willing to help achieve all to push and encourage the livestock farmers of the region to get involved.
Also, Honorable Dr. Vitalis Ndu, the Chairman of Ezeagu Local Government, has expressed full support for L-PRES Enugu. He welcomed the initiative aimed at assisting livestock farmers in the region, highlighting its potential benefits for local agriculture and economic development. This support signifies a commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of farmers and improving livestock management practices in Ezeagu.
The sensitization exercise has helped the livestock farmers understand the initiative of the World Bank through L-PRES on:
Productivity Improvement: Enhance livestock productivity and resilience through targeted interventions in value chains like beef cattle, poultry, and small ruminants.
Commercialization Support: Facilitate the commercialization of livestock value chains to boost economic growth and income for farmers.
Data Collection and Profiling: Conduct profiling exercises to gather data on farmers, enabling tailored support and resource optimization.
These initiatives aim to address systemic challenges in the livestock sector, fostering sustainable agricultural practices.
