LIVESTOCK PRODUCTIVITY AND RESILIENCE SUPPORT (L-PRES) PROJECT, ENUGU, JOINS ENUGU STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (ESUT) TO MARK THIS YEAR’S WORLD FOOD DAY.
On the 16th October, 2024, the World Celebrated World Food Day. The theme for this year’s World Food Day is “Right to Food for a better Life and a better Future”. This is a universal call to stress the basic human rights to accessible nutritious, affordable and sustainable food to ensure the well being of every individual.
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in it’s 20th Conference in 1979, declared October 16th as World Food Day. It is a world-wide affair that is celebrated on 16th October annually to increase the world’s consciousness on international campaigns to end hunger and to ensure that every individual has access to nutritious food. The objectives of World Food Day among others are to eradicate hunger, guarantee food security, enhance agricultural productivity, and to support sustainable food systems.
Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), joined the Global Community to commemorate the 2024 World Food Day. This year’s celebration marked the first time that World Food Day was officially witnessed in the state University since the inception of the institution. The event which took place in Prof. Julius Onah Auditorium, ESUT Agbani, Enugu State, Nigeria, was organised by the Faculty of Agriculture, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT). It was marked alongside with the 2024 Annual International Conference tagged “Innovative and Emerging Technologies for Transformative Research and Sustainable Development” organised by School of Postgraduate Studies, ESUT.
The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, Enugu, was part of the World Food Day celebration in Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT). One of the objectives of the Project participation is to establish linkage with the Institution and find areas of collaboration that will strengthen livestock production systems and resilience in the state. The population as well as the demand for animal protein in Enugu state in particular and Nigeria in general, is growing exponentially on daily basis. Since every individual has a right to sustainable source of affordable and nutritious animal protein, there is urgent need to bridge the gap. The project also used the opportunity to interact and reach out to relevant stakeholders within and outside the university community.
There were paper presentations by the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, ESUT and other Scholars from the University Community. The ceremony was well attended.
